Mariners vs. Rockies: Analysis

Both teams had an off day yesterday to prepare for this interleague series. Colorado is coming off a 2-1 series loss against the Cardinals at home, and the Mariners are coming off a 2-1 series loss against the Cubs in Chicago. This is the only three times these two teams will play this season.

We have a lefty-on-lefty matchup in Seattle today. Lefty Austin Gomber will take the mound for the visiting Rockies, and lefty Marco Gonzales will take the bump for the home team. Which team has the edge in this series opener? Let’s dive in.

Mariners vs. Rockies: Mariners Preview

Seattle came into this season with postseason aspirations after ending their playoff drought last year. However, it has not been a great start for the Mariners whatsoever. While the win-loss record is less than ideal, the Mariners have actually played very well to start this season. On the rubber, Seattle is 8th in pitching WAR and 9th in FIP. In the batter’s box, Seattle is 19th in wRC+, 17th in WAR, and 25th in wOBA. It’s safe to say this lineup is not holding its own this season while their pitching has been great.

Lefty Marco Gonzales will take the mound tonight at home for the Mariners. In his two starts, both vs. the Guardians, Gonzales has pitched 10.2 innings allowing five runs on 12 hits with five walks in six strikeouts. Seattle split those two games. Gonzales has a 4.22 ERA and a 4.89 FIP so far this year.

Mariners vs. Rockies: Rockies Preview

The Rockies were not expected to be good at all this season, and so far, they have fit the bill. Since they have the benefit of playing at Coors Field, a lot of the Rockies’ offensive stats are always skewed. However, this season their pitching has been solid while their offense has lagged behind. Colorado is 12th in wOBA, 27th in wRC+, and 29th in WAR. On the rubber, the Rockies are 23rd in FIP, 20th in WAR, and 26th in K/9.

Lefty Austin Gomber will make the start against the Mariners on the road tonight. In two starts this season, Gomber has gone 10.2 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. He has a 6.75 ERA and a 5.92 FIP this season.

Mariners vs. Rockies: Prediction

Both of these teams struggle against left-handed pitching. Seattle is 28th in wRC+ against lefties, while Colorado is 25th. Neither pitcher is much better than the other, and my numbers actually favor the Rockies. I will gladly take them +1.5 runs tonight.

Prediction: Rockies +1.5 -140
