“All-Newcomer” teams have been a staple of TGS since its debut in the late 1950s, when our first such collection of college hoop debutantes featured a couple of players you might have heard of before...Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor. Throughout the decades many all-time hoop greats have graced TGS All-Newcomer teams, from Wilt and Baylor to Rick Barry and Lew Alcindor, to Bill Walton, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan, and many others. In the spirit of that legacy, our “Newcomer” teams continue to retain a special place in our hearts, and we look forward greatly to their inclusion on these pages at the conclusion of each publishing season.

2021 NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Jalen Suggs, Gonzaga...For much of the campaign it looked as if Ok State’s Cade Cunningham was going to win this honor by acclamation. As the campaign progressed, however, it become more and more difficult to overlook the do-everything Gonzaga phenom Suggs. Especially if listening to many of those who project the upcoming NBA Draft and are forecasting Suggs as the top pick. In the Big Dance, the 6-4 Suggs surely outshined Cunningham, who by the end of the season was generating some doubters about his ability to succeed at the next level, pointing to a shooting percentage barely at 42% inside of the arc, while speculation grew about his level of athleticism. Though his 3-point shot proved surprisingly good, Cunningham’s overall game didn’t seem quite as rounded as that of Suggs, especially on the stop end. Suggs kept impressing thru the Big Dance, and even though the Zags fell short in the end, Suggs’ 40-foot buzzer-beater heave at the end of overtime to knock out UCLA in the national semis will live forever in Big Dance lore. In the end, we think this was a rather clear choice.

Following is another TGS tradition, our additional “Newcomer” teams divided by region for this 2020-21 season.
