The final major of the season could be summed up in one name...RORY McILROY.

“The Rory” (our soubriquet) is in a Tiger-like zone and there is not a lot that the USPGA can do to the Valhalla course to neutralise his current game.

However, it will come as little surprise that the chalkmen have slashed the odds of the World No.1.

So at 5/1 (6.00) there is not a lot of value left in “The Rory” and we would prefer to phase him into any betting action after the opening round [or two] has unfolded.

There are also few sweets on offer on the next guys in the betting lists with Adam Scott second best at 12/1 and Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson--whose 62 in the final round of the WGC would have put an extra bounce in lefty’s step this week; Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, “Mr Steady” Jim Furyk and the very out-of-sorts Tiger Woods; priced between 20/1 and 33/1.

South African Charl Schwartzel (right) has got to be considered; but 40/1 is not a standout price and Hideki Matsuyama -- our fancy to be the first Japanese major winner-- indicated that he may still be a little short of maturity when letting a promising opening go west at Royal Liverpool.

The weather patterns may play a part in the outcome of the final major with thunderstorms likely to be prevalent for the opening two days of competition.

Of the bigger odds, Angel Cabrera remains on our OTW list. The Argentinean can still get it round these tricked up US major tracks. He would have been contending for a top 10 place at The Open were it not for a poor opening 18 holes.

We will also be taking a punt on Robert Karlsson and Kevin Chappel at 100/1 and bigger to take advantage of their early tee times and threaten the first round leaderboard.
