TGS SPECIAL REPORT...EARLY MAY BASEBALL UPDATE!
by Bruce Marshall, Goldsheet.com Editor
It’s easy enough to locate the MLB standings every day. Just open up any sports page, or click into any sports website worth its salt, and the standings are easy to find.
Bettors value won-loss records, too, but there’s a different measuring device most “players” want to be abreast of as well. Money Line and Run Line standings provide an extra barometer for handicappers to consult as they make their daily selections, so we provide those true “money” standings by division below. We will provide shorter-term calculations as the season progresses, but for now, we provide an overview since opening day.

What jumps out in the Money Line standings reflects regular W-L tables as well; in other words, it’s been a bad season thus far for the L.A.-area teams, as the Angels and Dodgers both rate at the bottom of their respective leagues. Other interesting developments include all AL West teams except Texas in minus territory, all AL Central teams save the White Sox in plus territory, and the performance of the top three teams in the AL East (Baltimore, Yankees, and Boston), all at +528 or better. Correspondingly, Tampa Bay (-681) and Toronto (-1175) have been making it a big easier for the top three in the AL East.

More interesting numbers in the Run Line standings, which often do not closely reflect the straight-up records as does the Money Line. Some discrepancies also in comparison to individual teams on the Money Line, too; no better example than the Indians, +583 on the Money Line but -628 on the Run Line. The Giants have also offered poor Run Line value (-841) compared to their Money line (+365) performance. And while the Blue Jays have offered as poor Run Line value (-1002) as they have on the Money Line (-1175), the lowly Marlins have been an effective break-even proposition on the Run Line (only -7) compared to their poor (-997) Money Line performance.
