Georgetown vs Xavier Betting Preview

Georgetown’s struggles have been well documented, and Big East schedule makers did not do the Hoyas any favors by kicking off their conference slate against Xavier then UConn. Since 2014, the Musketeers are 13-4 straight-up against Georgetown, including an 11-6 mark against the spread.

Georgetown vs Xavier Analysis

Xavier coach Sean Miller escaped NCAA sanctions after an extended investigation that seemed sure to entwine Miller with former assistants Book Richardson and Mark Phelps (each hit with multi-year show-cause sanctions) from the well-publicized case from when all were at Arizona. So, that sigh of relief you might have heard off in the distance is probably just Miller exhaling.

Much of last year’s NIT winner on the Xavier side has returned and now joined by well-traveled guard Souley Boum, featured in the past at South Florida and UTEP and scoring at a 17 points per game, one of five double-digit scorers for Miller. Xavier won last year’s meeting between these squads in hearty fashion, 97-75, and a repeat would be no surprise.

Xavier enters this contest with one of the best offenses in the country, and the Musketeers have been on fire from beyond-the-arc this season connecting on almost 41-percent of their attempts from deep (No. 7 in the country).

Patrick Ewing has five wins against a collection of modest mid-and-low majors, but his Hoyas are winless against power conference foes with a thumping loss to Loyola Marymount thrown into the mix. Georgetown hasn’t beaten a team in KenPom’s top 200 yet this season. In the Hoyas’ latest loss to Syracuse, the Orange shot 50-percent from the floor en route to 83 points.

Aside from occasional bursts from transfer guards Primo Spears (ex-Duquesne; 17.2 points per game), Brandon Murray (ex-LSU; 15.1 points per game), and Jay Heath (ex-Arizona State 14.4 points per game), the Hoyas offenses tends to look lost with limited help from the bench.

Georgetown vs Xavier Prediction

The over has cashed in four of the last five games for both teams. The Hoyas look ill-equipped to stop 7-foot Jack Nunge. Nunge has 16 points and nine rebounds in last year’s contest, and should be able to have his way in this contest. Xavier’s team total is set at 83.5 points, and that’s a mark that they’ve eclipsed six times this season against much better competition than Georgetown (Florida, Gonzaga and West Virginia to name a few). As long as Miller keeps his foot on the gas and lets his squad run, it’s a mark that they should pass.
