Pac-12 North
After a disappointing conclusion to the 2021-22 season, Oregon named Dan Lanning as head coach to replace Mario Cristobal. As the mastermind behind Georgia’s defense in recent years, Lanning will be charged with leading a defense that has plenty of returning talent. The Ducks turned to the transfer portal to reload on offense, bringing in highly-touted QB Bo Nix from Auburn, RB Mar’Keise Irving from Minnesota and WR Chase Cota from UCLA.
Since the Pac-12 moved to the North vs South division format in 2011, the North representative has won nine of the 11 conference championship games. The Ducks have captured the North division crown each of the last three seasons, and have opened as the +200 favorites to win the league in 2022.
Washington State named Jake Dickert as its new head coach after a rocky period with former coach Nick Rolovich. As the interim coach at the end of last season, Dickert led the Cougars to three wins in five games, including a victory over Washington in the Apple Cup.
Oregon State brought in some intriguing pieces to help the Beavers’ defense, including Braylyn Oliver from Louisville and Andrew Chatfield from Florida.
Pac-12 South
After starting the year 4-3 with losses to BYU, San Diego State and Oregon State, Utah was hard to find on the national radar before rattling off six straight wins to capture the conference title and a berth in the Rose Bowl. QB Cam Rising and RB Tavion Thomas will both return to a Utes offense that flourished in the second half of the season. Utah adds former Florida stand-out Mohamoud Diabate to its defense after making 17 starts for the Gators in his three-year college career.
Lincoln Riley will have a plethora of talent to work with in his debut season at USC. The former Oklahoma coach will bring his quarterback Caleb Williams and receiver Mario Williams along for the ride to Los Angeles. The Trojans also added Biletnikoff Award-winning receiver Jordan Addison from Pittsburgh.
A lot of question marks continue to swirl around Arizona State and its impending NCAA investigation. Eight players signed with NFL teams during the spring, and 17 more entered the transfer portal. Herm Edwards is left with a skeleton of the coach staff that he arrived in Tempe with a couple seasons ago.
